Shibori Weave with Rust &Indigo Dyeing
Saturday 21st & Sunday 22nd March 2026. A two day introductory workshop to Shibori Weave
Service Description
A two day workshop designed as an ‘Introduction to Shibori Weave’ - a process of weaving and resist dyeing through gathers and pleats, achieved with a pattern thread pulled tightly once the cloth is removed from the loom. An opportunity to explore yarn, pattern, texture and colour through the combination of structure, surface and dyes in weave. The course is designed for beginners who have some previous weaving experience to the intermediate and advanced weaver who are welcome to bring their own ‘portable’ looms. In this case, you will be issued with draft plans prior to the course - time depending of course. Please do contact me prior to booking to chat through your requirements. A limit of four students is placed on the course to enable guided and learner focused teaching. Day 1- you will weave on pre-dressed 8 shaft looms, (or bring your own 4 or 8 shaft pre-dressed loom) and be guided on the history of Shibori, a brief theory of woven shibori, taken through planning, structures and yarn choices. We will cover Monks Belt, Twill and overshot designs, learning how to record notes for those that feel the need to ‘go rogue!’ Day 2 - is all about the alchemy and the mark making! Using indigo and rust dye vats, you will be provided with recipes and taken through the steps to create your own dye vat and how to prepare your cloth for dyeing. You will then dye your samples and be open to those beautiful unexpected outcomes that may occur. Day 2 will also talk through the potential of designing your own Shibori projects and further experimentation after the course, setting you up with your own weaving exploration once home. All materials and supporting handouts will be provided. The course is aimed at those with a basic knowledge of weave, to the intermediate and more advanced weaver but those that have never explored Shibori Weave previously - or perhaps only ‘dabbled.’ Please do feel free to contact me to talk through your needs, questions prior to booking if necessary. Lunch and refreshments included, free on-site free parking also available. Feel free to contact Sharon with any queries about the course.
