Textile Design Course – Woven Papers

A playful introduction to weaving with paper

100 British pounds

Service Description

This one-day course introduces the wonderfully versatile world of weaving with papers. Through simple processes and lots of experimentation, you’ll discover how weaving can transform paper into entirely new surfaces. The course can be taken on its own or alongside the Dyed Papers course as a two-day experience. When booked together there is a 10% discount, bringing the total to £180 for both days. You are welcome to bring your own papers from the Dyed Papers course, but this is not essential. I will supply a range of specially printed and dyed papers, so you will not be at a disadvantage if you have not attended the previous course. The day unfolds in three gentle stages: Broad enquiry – exploring the process of weave and how this age-old structure can create new surfaces Focused experimentation – responding to your discoveries and those curious “ooh, what happens if…?” moments Pinpointing your interest – creating a series of distinct woven surfaces using a variety of papers Throughout the day we’ll explore the potential of pattern and plain, play with the chaos of printed surfaces, and look at how simple woven structures affect visual qualities. We’ll experiment with different paper types, the effects of colour, and how shape and form can shift within woven structures. We’ll also touch on how weaving appears everywhere in our lives — from textiles and construction to architecture, science and medicine — and how this simple process can influence the way we see and use materials. By the end of the day you will have created a range of woven paper samples, each with different qualities but connected through your own areas of interest. We’ll also talk about how these could develop further in your own creative practice — perhaps into sketchbooks, surfaces to print or draw onto, framed pieces, or something entirely unexpected. This course is open to all art, design and craft enthusiasts — even if you have never thought of yourself as a weaver. It’s a wonderful way to explore pattern, structure and surface, and I can almost guarantee it will spark ideas for what comes next. I encourage permission to play, and this is a course I truly love teaching. There is so much potential in these simple beginnings, whether you think of yourself as a weaver or not.
